I think this will be beneficial. I heard this some time ago from a philosophy of religion course. (This one, to be specific. http://www.teach12.com/ttcx/coursedesclong2.aspx?cid=4680) I don’t remember how it goes exactly, so I’ll take a few creative liberties.
A man is being burned at the stake for heresy. As he is being tied to the stake in question, he is desperately trying to dissuade his captors from carrying out his sentence. He pleads, “I ask you to consider, just for a moment, the possibility that you might be wrong.”
They ignore him, and burn him anyway. However, the man’s plea is also my own. In discussing controversial topics like religion, caution is necessary. I’m absolutely not trying to promote any particular belief system; I’m merely asking for consideration of the possibilities.
